Fire Prevention Week, instituted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 1922, stands as an annual reminder of the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which occurred on October 8-9. What initially began as a single day has since evolved into a week-long campaign in the United States and Canada, focusing on raising awareness, educating communities about fire hazards, and promoting proactive fire safety measures.
During Fire Prevention Week, typically observed in early October, the NFPA collaborates with fire departments, schools, and organizations to disseminate crucial information on fire safety. Each year brings a new theme, addressing specific aspects of prevention, and encourages individuals and communities to take proactive steps in safeguarding lives and property. This initiative remains a vital force in cultivating a culture of fire safety and preparedness across North America.
This Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” worked to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking. Even though the 2023 campaign is over, you can keep using the messaging all year round.
